Most groups on campus vote on their set list at the beginning of each semester and then hold auditions within the group to determine soloists.
GQ is different.
At the beginning of each year, we hold a meeting where every member of the group presents a song they’d like to solo on. If people like it, we do it! This is good for three reasons:
- GQ does a bunch of new songs every semester.
- People get to solo on songs that they actually like and sound good on, so each voice gets a chance to be featured.
- We get a way bigger range of musical styles because members are encouraged to choose songs that represent their own musical tastes that the rest of the group may not have even heard before. Instead of being stuck with the same top-40 songs, GQ does a wild range of music from Katy Perry, Chamillionaire, Frank Sinatra, Belle & Sebastian, Queen, Radiohead, Elton John, No Doubt, The Postal Service, Gavin DeGraw, Gloria Estefan, Counting Crows, Weird Al Yankovic, Maroon 5, Gershwin, Paul Simon, WHAM!, Sondheim, The Beatles, S Club 7….you get the idea.
